Unplugged: SchoolConnect

Unplugged (SchoolConnect) is an initiative aimed at addressing substance use disorders among secondary school students in India.

Over the past five decades, evidence-based interventions for substance use prevention in schools, particularly through Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), have garnered attention. While RCTs in this domain have predominantly occurred in the United States, the European Drug Abuse Prevention (EU-Dap) trial marked a significant milestone in Europe by implementing The Unplugged intervention across seven countries, showcasing promising results in reducing substance use among adolescents.

Indian Scenario: In India, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment's National Survey on Extent & Patterns of Substance Use in 2019 shed light on the prevalence of substance use, with tobacco emerging as the most commonly abused substance. Additionally, behavioural addictions such as internet addiction have gained prominence, presenting challenges akin to substance use disorders.

Substance use disorders pose a significant public health challenge, contributing to preventable deaths and a myriad of health issues. Tobacco and alcohol, in particular, stand as leading causes of mortality globally, while non-substance use disorders like internet addiction also impact academic performance and mental health.

Despite the growing awareness, research on school-based interventions for substance use prevention in India remains limited. However, efforts such as Perry 2009 and Reddy 2002 have highlighted the potential of school and family-based interventions in addressing substance use among adolescents.

The SchoolConnect seeks to assess the impact of a School-Based Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) modelled after the EU-Dap Unplugged Trial, tailored to the Indian context. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of interventions targeting alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and internet use among secondary school students.

The program spans three years, with baseline assessment and three follow-up assessments conducted annually. Four interventions, preceded by substance use awareness events, are implemented.
Drawing inspiration from The Unplugged model, the intervention focuses on enhancing students' knowledge, attitudes, and intrapersonal skills related to substance use. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on responsible internet use. Parental involvement and counseling services are integral components of the intervention.

SchoolConnect represents a meaningful effort to address substance use disorders among Indian adolescents through evidence-based interventions. By leveraging school-based platforms and integrating parental engagement, the initiative aims to foster a supportive environment conducive to healthy behaviours and overall well-being among students.
